Vermeer. The Golden Age of Dutch Art

The exhibition is curated by Arthur K. Wheelock, Walter Liedtke, and Sandrina Bandera. It features eight works by Johannes Vermeer and about fifty works by Dutch 17th-century artists. Vermeer painted no more than fifty works in his lifetime, and of these we only know thirty-seven today. The exhibition will feature masterpieces like Vermeer’s Little Street as well as exceptional works by Carel Fabritius, one of the most famous artists of the time. Fabritius died in the Delft Explosion of 1654 when a gunpowder store exploded, destroying much of the city. Pieter de Hooch and Emmanuel de Witte are also featured in this exhibition, along with artists who were very successful at the time but who are less known today, including Gerard ter Borch, Gerrit Dou, Nicolaes Maes, Gabriël Metsu, Frans van Mieris, Jacob Ochtervelt and Jan Steen.
