Titian and the Renaissance in Venice

Metropolitan Art Museum
Japan, Tokyo
January 21, 2017 - April 02, 2017

Days of exhibition

For the first time in Japan an extraordinary selection of masterpieces by Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese and other important artists active in Venice in the 16th century presents a comprehensive overview of the Venetian Renaissance. Curator Giovanni C.F. Villa and liaison curator Akiko Kobayashi wished to move the focus away from Florence, the subject of numerous exhibitions in Japan, and present the equally florid and revolutionary school of Venice. Generous loans from the Uffizi, the Capodimonte Museum, the Fondazione Musei Civici in Venice and the Municipal Museums in Vicenza, many of which have never traveled outside of Italy before, demonstrate the instrumental role Venice had in shaping Renaissance culture and its influence on art in the following centuries.
