Marking its first time in Italy, the exhibition is curated by Marla Prather and Lawrence R. Rinder and features a selection of artists that have shaped both modern and contemporary art. The pieces on display are part of the Whitney Museum of American Art’s permanent collection. From Edward Hopper’s realism to Jackson Pollock’s instinctive bouts of spontaneity; from Frank Stella’s precise geometrics to the young writers Keith Haring and Jean Michel Basquiat, to the recent digital experiments by Tony Oursler. All of these are forms of expression that reflect the difficult aftermath of WW2, after which traditional art forms had become obsolete, inappropriate, and anachronistic.
