Days of exhibition
The exhibition demonstrates Caravaggio’s lasting influence on generations of artists from all corners of the globe. The focus of the exhibition is The supper at Emmaus (1606) by the artist from the Pinacoteca di Brera. It is the first time the work travels to Asia. The work is shown with a selection of works by four living Hong Kong artists: Chow Chun Fai, Hing Keung, Tsang Kin Wah and Wucius Wong. The supper at Emmaus was painted during a difficult period in Caravaggio’s life. He had been forced into exile for having killed a man. The painting depicts Jesus who, after being resurrected, reveals himself to his disciples. Caravaggio uses layers of chiaroscuro, which add drama and mystery to the composition while retaining its realistic look. The lessons learned from Caravaggio are evident in the work of the selected artists, each with its own contemporary voice.
