Antonello da Messina. Return to Sicily

The exhibition presents the work of Antonello da Messina in chronological order. The artist’s works are presented in their cultural and social context in relation to the Mediterranean, and the central role that Sicily played in the region during his time is highlighted in the exhibition. In addition to the Annunciata, which is normally on view at Palazzo Abatellis, the works on display include the Crucifixion from the collection of Baron Samuel von Brukenthal in Hermannstadt, the triptych with the Madonna and Child, Saint John the Baptist and Saint Benedict from the Uffizi, the Portrait of a Young Gentleman (long considered a self-portrait) from the Pinacoteca Malaspina of Pavia and the Portrait of a Man from the Mandralisca Museum in Cefalù. The exhibition also features the Syracuse Annunciation and the Polyptych of San Gregorio di Messina.
